Nutsedge: How to Identify It, and Why Your Weed Killer Did Nothing

Nutsedge is the weed people treat twice before they find out what it is. It looks enough like grass to be ignored, grows faster than the lawn so it stands proud a day after mowing, and shrugs off the broadleaf weed killer that handles everything else in the yard — because it is a sedge, a third family that is neither grass nor broadleaf, and most selective herbicides are built to spare one and kill the other. Underneath it lives on nutlets: small underground tubers, dozens per plant, each capable of starting a new one. That is why pulling makes it worse and why a wet, poorly drained corner grows it every single year.

When to do it

How to do it

  1. Step 1

    Confirm it is nutsedge: roll the stem between your fingers

    A sedge stem is solid and triangular in cross-section — roll it between finger and thumb and you can feel the three edges, where a grass stem is round or flattened and hollow at the nodes. The leaves come off the stem in three ranks rather than two, so looking down at the plant you see three directions, not opposite pairs. The color is usually a lighter, glossier yellow-green than the surrounding turf, and it grows noticeably faster: a patch that is taller than the lawn two days after mowing is the everyday tell.

  2. Step 2

    Work out which one you have — it changes the product

    Yellow nutsedge has light yellow-green leaves that taper to a fine point and produces tubers at the tips of its rhizomes, singly. Purple nutsedge is darker with blunter leaf tips and forms chains of tubers along the rhizome, which makes it substantially harder to control. Yellow is the common one across most of the country; purple is a southern problem. Herbicide labels distinguish between them, so the identification is not academic.

  3. Step 3

    Understand why the usual weed killer did nothing

    Selective lawn herbicides are sorted by plant family. A broadleaf product is designed to leave grasses unharmed, and a sedge is close enough to grass in the ways that matter to the chemistry that it is spared too. A grass killer, conversely, will take your lawn with it. Nutsedge needs a sedge-specific active ingredient, and buying one labeled for sedges — and for your grass species — is the whole of the product decision.

    Sedge herbicides vary sharply in which turf species tolerate them; several are unsafe on St. Augustine or centipede at rates that are routine on bermuda. Match the label to your grass by name before you buy. Always read and follow the product label — it is the legal authority on rates, timing, and safety. These windows are regional estimates, not a prescription; defer to the label and your local extension office.

  4. Step 4

    Do not pull it — that is how a patch becomes a colony

    Pulling a nutsedge plant breaks the connection to its nutlets and removes the top growth that was suppressing them. The tubers respond by sprouting, and one pulled plant routinely returns as several. A single plant can produce dozens of nutlets in a season and they stay viable in the soil for years, which is why the strategy has to be to exhaust the tubers over more than one season rather than to clear the patch today.

  5. Step 5

    Ask why that spot is wet — nutsedge is a drainage symptom

    Nutsedge thrives where soil stays saturated: a low corner, a downspout outfall, a leaking irrigation head, a compacted strip that ponds after rain. It tolerates those conditions better than turfgrass does and simply wins the ground. If it comes back in the same patch every year, the patch is the finding. Fix the grade, the downspout or the head, and the recurrence usually stops without further chemistry.

  6. Step 6

    Water deeply and infrequently rather than little and often

    Frequent shallow watering keeps the top few inches of soil permanently damp, which is the condition nutsedge is best at exploiting and the one that most disadvantages deep-rooted turf. Fewer, longer soakings that wet the root zone and then let the surface dry favour the grass in the same ground. This is the cheapest change on the page and it works on the cause rather than the plant.

  7. Step 7

    Plan on two seasons, and treat the survivors

    No single application clears an established stand, because the nutlets in the soil are untouched by anything applied to the leaves. A realistic program is to treat young plants, let the survivors emerge, and treat again — this year and next — so each generation is killed before it replenishes the tuber bank. Judging the first application a failure because plants reappear is how people conclude nutsedge is untreatable.

A single season's plant can leave dozens of nutlets in the soil, viable for years. Treat it, or change the conditions — do not weed it by hand.
Does nutsedge mean my lawn has a drainage problem?
Very often, yes. Nutsedge outcompetes turfgrass in soil that stays saturated, so a patch that returns in the same place every year is usually marking a low spot, a downspout outfall, a leaking irrigation head or compacted ground that ponds. Fixing the water is what stops the recurrence; herbicide only clears the current stand.
Will nutsedge go away on its own?
The top growth dies back with frost, but the nutlets overwinter in the soil and resprout, so the stand returns and usually larger. It is a perennial with an underground bank, not an annual you can wait out — which is why control is measured in seasons and aimed at exhausting the tubers rather than at clearing the patch once.
